are not nearly as extreme as the nra leadership is on this. so i think there's a possibility of getting some common sense gun control measures passed. and you know, i know it doesn't look like this congress can do anything, but i think we need to try, and i think if we have the support of the nra members, we have an opportunity. you know, for concealed carry permits which they want to extend to every state, there are at least ought to be some minimum standards. for example, you ought to be an adult in order to be able to get a concealed carry permit. so those are common sense measures. i think we start with those. and we have a dialogue, as senator mansion and others suggested, see if we can at least make some progress on an issue that you know, has to be addressed. if we don'ten respond after the sandy hook elementary school massacre, we really are complicit in the next massacre of innocent children and we've got to ask ourselves, is our political future really more important than the lives of these innocent children. >> congressman jim moran

it has been systematically starved by congress because the nra doesn't like the batf. it doesn't even have a full time confirmed leader. it is a firearms agency. the power of the nra is such in congress that they have essentially written this agency out of the book. >> when i talk about a new agency or this new initiative, is it just about guns or a far greater issue that everybody wants to put a piece in. >> sure. there are lots of moving parts here. obviously mental health is an enormous part. the federal government doesn't have a lot to do with mental health. mostly state issues. they can give money. they can give money to the states for sorts of things and they don't control issues of who gets institutionalized and who gets deinstitutionalized and what narcotics or what kind of medicine can be used on people, so color me very skeptical. as dana point out, there is not a lot of political will here among vulnerable democrats and they're the ones who will make the difference and the republican party is already completely aligned. >> let me talk to you about the suprem

gun owners, 74% of nra members support solutions like that. unfortunately, sometimes this plays out as a polarized political debate in segments like the one i was part of also on friday night, but the reality is the american public isn't polarized. the only place this is a polarized political debate is in congress. what we need to do is we need to take the voice of the american people who know that, as president obama said tonight, we can be better than this and hold our leaders accountable. >> to the politics side, this is very interesting to me. this is almost a mirror tragedy of what happened in britain in 1996 and scotland, 16 young 5 and 6-year-old children were killed. it was the worst shooting of its type in modern american history, and as a result, a full handgun ban was brought in. which would not be applicable here, because there are too many in circulation, however, it did happen. but what was most notable about the debate, it was completely non-political. it never descended into left and right. my question for you, steve, is why do

and also, west virginia senator joe manchin also a democrat, also a longtime member of the nra, said that he has changed his position after the massacre and now supports gun control legislation. lawmakers are hearing today from more than 20 family members and victims of mass shootings across this country. those people all came together on capitol hill and decided they needed to meet with leaders in congress and leaders in the white house. they are demanding that they seriously address gun violence in america. each person who came had a very emotional story to share and they included a father whose 24-year-old son was killed in arepo aurora, colorado, who shielded his girlfriend who the shooter took so many. a mother gunned down on a chicago bus. a father lost his 15-year-old son during columbine tragedy. and the list went on and on. and the photos kept coming out. their message, about 32 people are killed every single day by guns in this country and that it has got to stop. >> today, there will be 32 more families that know the pain and or that you just heard here today. so we pay a

one is the nra that believe if you can see lightning and hear thunder, you should own a gun and then the extreme left liberals that think we're just going to wave the magic wand and erase 300 million firearms that we have knowledge of today. you need to sit down in the middle. >> not going to happen. >> you're right. that's unfortunately the truth here. that's why in a sense we're spinning our wheels. there is a remedy to the problem. part of it revolves around our ability to properly vet people and continuous education with people and law enforcement, we are taught and it's impressed upon us the need to safeguard your weapons. the rest of america is on a whole another page. we're on one page, they're on another. we go through one vetting process, they go through basically none. this is the disconnect. >> lou? we're going to have to leave it there. i appreciate the conversation. and i know how you're feeling because i've met your kids. and i've met your wife and i'm sure you ugh hadded them a lot yesterday as well you should and lou palumbo, thank you very much. >> thank you, don. >>

for those of us who got to watch the nra commercial last week, the notion that more guns in the hands of good people will prevent gun crimes just isn't borne out by the facts. >> $100 gift cards are being offered for handguns, rifles and shotguns. up to $200 in gift cards for assault weapons. paul vercammen is live in los angeles. our latest poll shows that 37% of americans want major restrictions on guns. does this mean today's buyback may see more than the usual response after the recent school shooting? >> reporter: we'll have to see about that. certainly the city of los angeles is hoping so. but i can tell you this. this seventh is still 45 minutes away from starting and there are well over a dozen cars in this buyback line. they will receive $100 for a pistol or rifle. and $200 for an assault weapon. over about the last four years, these gun buyback programs have had people turn in more than 8,000 guns. it's all about the anonymity. the drivers come in. they want the guns in the trunk, they want the guns unloaded. but just in case they are loaded, they will dump the guns and the
